Loch Lomond is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Contrary to the belief of many tourists we speak to, its not man made!

It is the largest fresh water lake in Great Britain. It is crossed by the Highland Boundary Fault line. At the northern end, you will find the majestic Ben Lomond.

There are many islands within Loch Lomond although the exact number is disputed. There are thought to be around 30 depending on water levels.

History of Loch Lomond, Scotland

“By yon bonnie banks and by yon bonnie braes...”

This haunting, beautiful song is known the world over, but the origins are uncertain. It is believed to have been penned in 1841 and concern a soldier from the 1745 Jacobite rebellion who survived and is returning home to Scotland by the 'low road' whilst his fallen comrades take the 'high road'.

Loch Lomond is home to many clans including Clan MacGregor, Clan Lennox, Clan Graham, the Colquhouns, the Macfarlanes and the Buchanan's.

The island of Inchcalloch used to be the burial place of the McGregor Clan. Another Island, Inchonnachan is famous for its wallabies!

Loch Lomond was a favourite tourist destination of Queen Victoria.

Loch Lomond was home to 18th century folk hero and outlaw Rob Roy Macgregor, immortalised in Walter Scott's novel “Rob Roy” and played in film by actor Liam Neeson.

The local area is also steeped in history and legend. Nearby Dumbarton Castle was used as a prison for Scottish freedom fighter William Wallace. It was from here that infant Mary, Queen of Scots, sailed to France.

Another legend, concerning Dumbarton Rock, where Dumbarton Castle is situated, is that Saint Patrick, who was allegedly born in nearby Old Kilpatrick, was fleeing from witches. He took a boat and sailed from the River Clyde to Ireland. The witches could not cross water and therefore threw a large stone after him, hoping to sink his boat. The stone missed, but landed where Dumbarton Rock now resides.
